Value Propositions: Theory and cases. Episode 15. Let´s practice. Example 5. A Global Maritime Shipping Initiative. Part C. Fossil Fuels and Shipping.
We hope you can enjoy and take advantage of our warming spring season. This week we have been researching and reading about this fascinating example that has taken us to review an incredible bibliography.
The effort of doing a CVP for the Vision 2050 project has the potential to change global maritime shipping.
We are guiding you to understand all the elements required to design and create a good customer value proposition. This example is a mandate of 5 entrepreneurs with solid and robust experience in the global maritime sector, who requested us to help them. Given the complexity of the shipping industry, we decided
to extend our example as much as it´s required. Today it´s the third publication, and we have concentrated
our work on understanding what is moving or driving this industry. At the beginning of our saga, we expected to finish this example in one shot (one week). It has turned out to be more complex than we thought. I apologize for extending it to 6 episodes, but this exercise also has a lesson for all of us: it is better to extend deadlines and do something good than rush for the wrong CVP (Customer Value Proposition) creations. In business modeling, if your CVP is wrong, then your whole model will be completely mistaken. Designing an excellent CVP demands opening your wings as a corporate strategist as ample as possible, not thinking as a marketing specialist, but as a problem solver of complex situations. Anyone who says “to do a CVP is easy, doesn´t know anything at all about business modeling, and doesn´t comprehend what is the true meaning of corporate strategy”.

We have dedicated several days to investigating the bulk shipping segment. We also have analyzed the different dimensions of bulk carriers, and why is this segment a core element of the industry of entrepreneurs. Several discoveries have been encountered, and we have shared them with you accordingly. Every single slide of today is substantial. Take your time to learn with each of them, please. I also invite you to watch the following illustrative audiovisual about how the earth would look like in the hypothetical case that all the ice melts overnight. It is a fictional video that may help us as a preface to our class.
Let´s read the third section of example 5.
This package of slides will help you understand the complexity of one segment of the shipping industry: fossil fuel ships. Fossil Fuel Tankers are those that transport petroleum, coal, and gas. “Petroleum includes crude oil, hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGLs), refined petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel fuel, and biofuels” (1). It is a work-in-progress document, that will continue next week. Feel free to download it, pass it on, and print it for your weekend study. Again, there is no homework at the moment, but to request you to read the material, search for additional bibliography and add your notes. search for complementary data over the Internet and enjoy our content. If you have trouble reading the slides, we recommend you download the PDF document and print it on real pages of paper. Printed paper is a better pedagogical tool for reading.
Every single schism of our world is linked to the way we use the sea”

Announcement.
The complexity of this case is tied to many factors that we need to consider before making our CVP. This is the third consecutive publication about this case, and all the previous elements to consider when we build CVPs for legacy projects of this behemoth impact. We will continue analyzing the sea shipping industry next week, and I have opened two more episodes. We will remain in the elaboration of example 5 until we are satisfied with our teaching-learning experience. See you next Friday 31st of May, 2024.
Musical Section.
This saga is about improvement, amelioration, upgrading, and the advancement required in the theory and practice of value propositions. Example number 5 will take more time than needed, but it will be worthwhile. Value propositions are the first step in our business modeling frameworks. If the value proposition is improper, then our business model is mistaken.
Aujourd´hui we have founded a lovely selection of chamber music, in which the bassoon, the flute, and the piano are the protagonists. The composers: François Devienne (1759-1803), known as the Mozart of the Flute of France; Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848), and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). The artists playing the instruments are Massimo Data, bassoon; Mario Carbotti, flute; and Piero Barbareschi, piano. I truly wish you to listen to the beauty of the bassoon, and how sweet is its sound when fraternizing with the flutes. For more information click https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/b/bassoon-trios/. It is a delightful CD masterpiece that plays a delectable background to read, to work or simply to relax.
