Value Propositions: Theory and cases. Episode 17. Let´s practice. Example 5. A Global Maritime Shipping Initiative. Part E. Cost Structure
Adorable readers:
Here we are again, with a new episode of the example number 5. At the moment, we are studying and analyzing the main core considerations for evaluating the global maritime industry. Our client is a quintuplet team of entrepreneurs who wish to leave a legacy project for the shipping transformation. Our entrepreneurs have dedicated a lifetime to this industry (see slide number 8), and they have joined their stamina, wisdom, and ideas to build a Vision 2050 initiative. They have contacted us because they need help to build a customer value proposition for their undertaking. This example is extremely complex, and that is why we decided to dedicate 7 episodes to prepare the conceptualization and contextual understanding of the industry.

Shipping economics.
The cost structure of the shipping industry is not difficult to understand when we describe the basics, which are the foundation for the current intricacies of the details. Each vessel has a life of its own. Each ship is designed with a purpose, and its value goes beyond naval engineering and technical design. Each ship connects the necessities of some, with the abundance of others. 90% of the global trade is transported in vessels of one-of-a-kind category, size, age, type of cargo, major maritime routes, fuel price, speed, financial obligations, etc. Without maritime logistics, our world economy (as it is working right now) would sink. “Maritime transport supports most of the commercial flows” (Rodrigue, 2017). In consequence, our sight as strategists must be established in learning about all the bits and pieces of what is happening in the seas.
The cost structure of shipping.
Today we will study the cost structure of shipping, and the revenue sources of the industry too. Find the following document of 37 slides. We request you to read it thoroughly, please. We have prepared the fundamentals and the most critical information that you will need to prepare the CVP for this project. Next week we will proceed with the construction of the value proposition, and this chapter is crucial for you. Feel free to download it, print it, and share it. Explore more information with the bibliography provided in slides 35 and 36. Feel free to ask me any questions through my inbox, which is located in the website tab “How to contact us”.
Every single schism of our world is linked to the way we use the sea”

Announcement.
With this chapter, we have fulfilled most of the aspects required to understand the complicatedness of this case. This is the fifth consecutive publication about the global maritime industry’s fundamental learning. This knowledge is required before building the CVP. It hasn´t been an easy task, but we think we have done our best. We have simplified an enormous amount of books and information, by synthesizing and connecting the dots of all the previous elements to consider when we build CVPs for legacy projects of this behemoth impact. We have clarified that we will need 7 episodes to finish this example. See you next Friday 21st of June.
Musical Section.
This saga is about improvement, amelioration, upgrading, and the advancement required in the theory and practice of value propositions. Example number 5 will take more time than needed, but it will be worthwhile. Value propositions are the first step in our business modeling frameworks. If the value proposition is improper, then our business model is mistaken.
Aujourd´hui we wish to share Ennio Morricone´s gold standards. Without words, Ennio´s golden music speaks for itself. Fifty of his masterpieces are waiting for you below, by clicking the VEVO video of the YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@EnnioMorriconeVEVO. Ennio Morricone´s artworks are true music for all of us. His life oeuvres transformed eternally our lives forever.
