Portfolio Analysis: Igniting a long-term spirit in a short-term world (VII). DBR watercolor.

Have a blessed middle of the week. Today we will continue with our journey when trying to understand how to use one of the DBR methods that has been tested and used by educators during the last 20 years. We already shared about step number 1. FOCUS. Do not forget that we are trying to sketch how to apply this process, in consequence, I am just drafting a possible first iteration. But each step itself must be iterative and it has to contemplate the whole loop: Focus-understand-define-conceive-build-test-present. Because of time limitations, I am simply going to cover the main sketching of ideas in a general manner.

Remember that FOCUSING (see the slide below) only sets the direction of the DBR process, and is simply the beginning of everything. In the FOCUS phase, the scope has been at least framed and specifies the constraints and the scale of the project. In addition, it immerses the team in the situation, the foundation to explore the area of interest. Focusing ensures that there is something worth designing and that the team has the expertise to succeed. Gathering information starts here. Gathering information is simply to let yourself flow to begin to focus, in order to collect intellectual information, but to gather doesn´t mean to understand it.

Phase number 2. UNDERSTAND.
After we focus on our project, we open the tollgate again and proceed with phase number 2. UNDERSTAND. In this phase, design/researchers are committed to the study. Yep! We need to study, not just read what we began to gather on phase number one FOCUS. But to study as if we are in the University. This means not just to ask ourselves a lot of questions (as I have taught you when we use strategy innovation frameworks), but to investigate all the information that we began to gather in the FOCUS first phase. In this step, we simply put our cap of a studious learner. Let´s see it below in slide 2.

Phaser number 3. DEFINE. After understanding all our data collected, then the define-phase is shown below. We think it is self-explanatory.

Phase number 4. CONCEIVE.
This is the phase that personally, I like the most. It is the problem solver artist’s soul in action. It is the one of sketching a plan for the solution. Look:

On my next publication, I will proceed with phases 5, 6, and 7: BUILD, TEST, PRESENT. And I will summarize the process. Next week we will continue with our outline.
See you again this coming Friday. Blessings and thank you for reading to me.
