Leg 7. From Auckland to Itajaí (X). About half of the world population lives on less than $2.50/day.
“About ½ of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day”. More than 1.3 billion lives in extreme poverty — less than $1.25 a day.
Good afternoon: Itajaí is closer than ever!. By the way, before starting, Alejandro Guillermo Lozano Artolachipi, I love you for all the support during these days I did not have a laptop. With all my heart. Thank you.

Live Position of the Fleet. Now.
Team Brunel is expected to arrive in Itajaí sooner. According to the Volvo Ocean Race official information, Brunel is expected to arrive at the first place to win this leg. Dongfeng is closely following the dutch. Teams Akzo Nobel, TTOP, and Mapfre are behind. As you know, TTOP and MAPFRE had to slow down after Cape Horn because some repairs were done to key parts of their boat. Let me share with you MAPFRE Video about how they repaired their mainsail in less than 13 hours. MAPFRE Skipper decided to stop, to ask for help from mainland Chile, and dedicated some hours to repair it. Watch it, please!
Four lessons come from MAPFRE Strategic move: (1) The Skipper Xavi Fernandez decided to stop and suspend the race for some time. (2) MAPFRE asked for help on its ground crew. These guys were reliable, showed up on time and brought everything MAPFRE crew needed to repair and patch the mainsail; (3) The high dedication of the crew to do it as quickly as possible but “right”, and (4) They follow the rules: The return to the point where MAPFRE had suspended navigation and resume the stage. This was amazing. Moreover the first navigation days after the reparation, the Spanish team decided to slow down, to give some time to the patch to glue perfectly (at least that is what I heard).
Passing this experience to strategy: the top strategists in the world which are moving the waves of this planet must have to suspend racing when repairs are needed. Be humble and ask for help from other different sources of expertise. Remake the Industry 4.0 framework taking in consideration that the main purpose of Industry 4.0 MUST be to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life of more than 3 Billion people who live with less than USD$ 2.50 dollars a day and, last but not least, create a design of the educational system previously to any Industry 4.0 action plan or implementation.

Please don´t race into Industry 4.0 without being ready.
If we continue racing with Industry 4.0 as we did it in the Southern Ocean, this will take us negative consequences. Look, we have to report, that one life is lost (which is the most terrible thing which happened to our fleet), two teams have retired from the race (SHK/Scallywag and Vestas), two boats had to stop to make repairs (and are now way behind). I had to stop for a few days in order to find a laptop, and here I am re-taking my sailing journey with you again.
I have to report positive news to Alicante Headquarters team. I have a computer again and I will be able to continue sailing. I am so happy about it and looking forward to arriving at least not last.
Today´s topic is Industry 4.0: “Only if it reduces poverty as a competitive advantage”.
Initially, I would like to give you a snapshot or highlights of the status of poverty in the world.
If you wish to download the presentation in PDF, click here please: Eliescalante Leg 7 Trends in Competitive Advantage Poverty Highlights F 02042018
Second, I would like to ask the leaders of Industry 4.0 the following question: how do you foresee that Industry 4.0 will alleviate the problem of chronic poverty for 3 billion of people in the world?
Think with common sense: We don´t even have a consensual answer about how to define poverty, or what solutions will give us results to reduce it… and we are rushing in the southern ocean to implement Industry 4.0 when we have not even started to repair the problems of Industry 3.0!. I believe it is better to stop and repair the mainsail as MAPFRE did it. No matter if we arrive as the last team on Leg 7.
Third, and my last advice. A lesson of hope. Wait to see Eleonora Escalante Strategy Version 2.0 racing the next Volvo Ocean Race 2019-2020.
Have a beautiful day. More to come.
17:48 pm – San Salvador.

Alex Guillermo Lozano Artolachipi, I love you with all my soul.
